1. History of Fuji Tiara Mini I
The Fujifilm Tiara Mini I (commonly known as the Fujifilm DL Super Mini / Cardia Mini Tiara) is one of the smallest 35mm compacts, born in the mid-1990s and kicked off a high-end “Tiara” mini line from Fuji. This camera even received the TIPA “Best Compact Camera” award in 1995–1996, affirming the excellent quality that this camera delivers.
These are the versions of the Fuji Tiara line:
- Cardia Mini Tiara (DL Super Mini / Tiara Mini I): original released 1994, with 28mm f/3.5 lens, autofocus, ultra-small aluminum metal body.
- Tiara II: the design is almost identical to the I, with slight changes in the logo (the "Tiara II" logo and the strap attachment position of the machine as well as the production time several years after the Tiara I).
- Tiara Zoom (DL Super Mini Zoom / Cardia Mini Tiara Zoom): 28–56mm f/4.5–7.5 zoom version, thicker body but still in the premium compact segment, for those who prefer more flexibility in focal length.
2. Image quality of Fujifilm Tiara Mini I
Despite its ultra-small size, what Tiara sacrifices is not the lens quality. This camera equips a 28mm f/3.5 focal length lens with the famous Super EBC coating. Even when you shoot with grass film (like me) - Kodak Gold 200 - the colors remain rich, sharp, and have a very distinctive definition.
2.1. Shooting at light
In low light conditions, Tiara Mini I's image colors usually tend to be bright but still retain its clarity, without being harsh. At aperture f/5.6–f/8, the sharpness almost covers the frame. The contrast of the image is high, giving the picture clear depth and volume.
One nice point of the Fuji Tiara Mini I is its ability to shoot close-ups at a distance of 0.35m (i.e., 35cm) - better than the 45cm of Nikon L35 AD3! Combined with the focus indicator (yellow) on the side of the viewfinder, you can shoot at the closest distance without fear of out of focus. However, when taking closeup shots, you need to align to the smaller frame in the viewfinder to ensure the entire object we want to photograph is in the final frame For example, the picture below
In portrait taking, because 28mm focal length and maximum aperture of f/3.5 are not too suitable for portrait taking, I just gently test with the image below.
Typically, fixed focal length PNS cameras will usually have a 35mm angle like Nikon L35 AF, but in tight spaces, retreating further is impossible, the 28mm wide angle of the camera makes it easy to capture every moment you want (like at the market, etc.). Although the maximum aperture is only 3.5 instead of 2.8, in terms of sharpness, this camera is completely in common with Olympus Mju II, Nikon L35AF etc, even somewhat better (depending on personal taste).
2.2. Shooting against light
The EBC coating exploits its strength in preventing flare (flare) and ghosting when shooting directly with strong light sources. However, if the lighting is too bright, the image may still have a slight contrast loss, but it's still OK. Not to mention, quite a number of people like this effect because it creates a very "filmic", very "poetic" feeling for their photos. This coat is the difference between Cardia Tiara Mini and cheaper lines like Fuji Cardia Mini Everyday OP
2.3. Shoot with flash
One point you need to note with the Fuji Tiara Mini I is that this machine almost always turns on flash in all situations - quite like the series Fuji Everyday OP (even though it's pretty good outside in the sunshine!). This can sometimes be annoying if you're shooting streets or simply don't like the flash appearing in your photos. The good news is that we can turn off the flash through the menu on the back of the machine (see the HDSD video at the end of the post to know how) to do) - it's still better than not being able to turn the flash off at all Canon Autoboy Tele 6!
In cases that need to use flash, my impression is that the Fuji Tiara Mini's flash is quite soft (like Fuji Everyday OP good Pentax Espio 120swii, beats evenly, and gently (also possible due to the machine's small design - along with only using 1v CR2 battery as power). When taking street photographs in narrow spaces, a softer flash like this also helps start the person being taken more.
Note: When you turn off and restart the computer, the old settings in the back menu will be lost. You need to restart off flash mode if necessary.
3. Feeling of Holding Fuji Tiara Mini I
At first, I was quite afraid of machines that were too small (like Fuji Cardia Tiara Mini, Rollei 35 SE, Pentax Espio 120 SW II...) because the camera body often doesn't have a point to rest your finger on to take the shot firmly, as well as the fear during the process of use My fingers will accidentally get into the frame, especially when the Fuji Tiara Mini I uses a wide focal length lens - 28mm. But actual use with Tiara makes me completely at ease! No matter what position you need the camera, in any shooting conditions from landscapes to closeup shots.
4. Auto mode of Fuji Tiara Mini I
With the eternal point and shoot spirit, and located in the high-end segment, the Fuji Tiara Mini I has a very genuine auto mode. Whether it's backlight or backlight, the auto mode handles it well. But you need to note one following point: after pressing the shutter, it will take a moment for the camera's shutter to be activated Rushing leads to sometimes missing a moment, but this was a general problem of the old autofocus film machines. To fix, you can use the Snap Focus function of the machine. And if you don't like any delay, you should consider using Olympus XA series, such as Olympus XA2.

Below is a video showing how to use the Fuji Tiara Mini I.
6. Advantages and Disadvantages of Fuji Tiara Mini I
6.1. Advantage
- Compact, light, can be held in one hand.
- 28mm lens with EBC coating is sharp and rich., captures backlight very well.
- Flash is soft, disperses light well.
- Drop-in-loading mode: avoid the case when opening back suddenly, the taken photos will be exposed.
- There are many shooting modes, including manual focus for capturing reflections in mirrors, or shooting through glass doors
6.2. Disadvantages
- The price is not cheap, but still cheaper than Contax T2, T3, Fuji Natura, Fuji Klasse, Minolta TC-1 etc.
- Although made of metal, aluminum is quite easy to dent/scratch if there is an impact, reducing the value of the machine, even causing damage
- It takes a bit of dexterity to load the movie
- The machine has a chronic disease of broken shutter cables. Over long time there will be a higher chance of breakage. But to be honest, the old film PS cameras were not manufactured to be usable today.

If you:

=> Fujifilm Cardia Tiara Mini I is the machine you should try
