Canon Autoboy 3: Detailed Review and Actual Photos

1. History of Canon Autoboy 3

The mid 80s was a time when Japanese camera brands competed extremely fiercely. After the huge success of Autoboy 1 (AF35M) and Autoboy 2 (AF35M II), Canon needed a new push to escape the old design rut. From that orientation, Canon Autoboy 3 was born with a "Bio-Design"-style rounded design. Immediately, this machine won prestigious awards European Camera of the Year 1986, affirming the quality of Autoboy.

If I had to use two words to describe the Canon Autoboy 3 in well-lit conditions, they are: sharp and brilliant. 38mm f/2.8 lens with 4 lens structure (same as Nikon L35ad3 really shines when there's sunshine. The photo results in extremely good contrast, creating a feeling of bulk. Although shot with popular Kodak Gold 200 film, the final color didn't disappoint the photographer.

Canon Autoboy 3 handles the colors very "flatteringly". Warm tones like red, orange or skin-tones are recreated in a rosy, warm way – true classic Canon.

2.2. Shoot backlight with Canon Autoboy 3

The multi-layer blue-violet coating helps the machine control flare quite well. When shooting against the sun, the photo still retains a certain clarity, with less haze that covers the entire frame.

In strong backlighting conditions, the Canon Autoboy 3 appears out of breath when the image appears rather clearly flare and haze causing glare streaks. This is the minus point of the machine if compared to other machines I've reviewed like Fuji Cardia Tiara Mini, Nikon L35AF, Nikon L35 AD3 or Canon Autoboy EPO etc. However, if you love these "optical mistakes", the Canon Autoboy 3 is the choice for you.

3.3. Flash shooting with Canon Autoboy 3

When the sensor detects that the subject is dark due to backlighting or that the lighting environment is not strong enough, the camera will automatically fire the flash to compensate the light (Fill-flash). You can turn off the flash via the button on the back of the machine, however the button is quite difficult to press because it's baby. But it's still better than not turning the flash off Autoboy Tele 6!

The Canon Autoboy 3's flash is strong, evenly dispersed, enough to cover large areas. For example, in the photo below, then the distance from the photographer to the market stalls was about 5-7 meters, but the camera still covered it evenly.

Because the flash is small, the light concentrates strongly in the center and gradually weakens to the four corners. This inadvertently creates a "tunnel" effect, directing the viewer's eyes to focus completely on the main subject in the center of the frame

It uses a light-sensitive SPD sensor to calculate the balance between shutter speed (from 1/8s to 1/500s) and aperture (f/2.8 to f/16). In complex lighting conditions such as shade alternating with strong sunlight, the camera usually tends to prioritize a large aperture to ensure a safe shooting speed, keeping the photos from blurring.

The photographer can almost completely trust in the 'brain' of the machine, just point it to the point and shoot without worrying about the photo being burnt or underexposed. The only thing you need to care about is whether you want to disable flash or not. You need to note that if forcibly turning off the flash (when the camera says flash on), you need to be very steady (or lean on somewhere steady) to ensure the picture doesn't be blurred due to the low shutter speed.

A plus point of the machine lies in its quiet shutter. Like the picture of the motorbike taxi driver above, even though I was standing about 2 meters away from him, it didn't startle them to wake up when taking the photo. But unfortunately, the machine doesn't have a hold button mode to postpone filming the next sheet like Nikon L35ad3 good Nikon L35af.

Canon has thought carefully with the grip beveled at a delicate angle. When picking up the camera, the photographer's index finger will automatically 'fall' into the shutter button position most naturally without having to reach, helping to minimize the phenomenon of camera shake. The camera's shooting button feels good, the half trigger and full trigger are clearly separated.
